The earth is 75% water, including the freshwater systems and the ice cover. The majority of the resources and threats originate in the underwater domain and the effective management of this space can bring a whole new paradigm shift in our socio-economic and socio-cultural outlook. Any attempts at governance or management of the underwater space will require effective Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA). The UDA framework as progressed by the Maritime Research Center (MRC), ensures nuanced policy & technology interventions along with acoustic capacity & capability building. The underwater requires the specialized expertise of acoustics and thus any UDA effort will mandate focused efforts towards acoustic capacity & capability building. The tropical waters of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and beyond, present unique challenges and opportunities and thus the acoustic capacity & capability building in these regions will have to be indigenous. The local site-specific, field experimental UDA, will require customized skills to handle the tropical waters.

The Indo-Swiss Centre of Excellence (ISCE), Pune has collaborated with the Maritime Research Center (MRC), to support skilling in the futuristic professions of UDA. The UDA framework as progressed by the MRC is gaining recognition across stakeholders and policy makers. More on the MRC activities and the UDA framework can be accessed in the following links:

The UDA framework is relevant to diverse stakeholders in marine and freshwater systems, offering potential career opportunities across various sectors for the enthusiastic and aspirational youth of India. In 2015, the Prime Minister of India announced the Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision, prompting extensive job creation through major projects. A Young India must seize these opportunities and shape promising futures to a rapidly evolving landscape.

The skilling programs designed by MRC in collaboration with M/S NirDhwani Technology Pvt Ltd (NDT) are provided in the document attached below. The complete mapping of the skilling opportunities, stakeholders, jobs, grades and the curriculum is also provided in a handbook on skilling.
