The earth is 75% water, including the freshwater systems and the ice cover. The majority of the resources and threats originate in the underwater domain and the effective management of this space can bring a whole new paradigm shift in our socio-economic and socio-cultural outlook. Any attempts at governance or management of the underwater space will require effective Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA). The UDA framework as progressed by the Maritime Research Center (MRC), ensures nuanced policy & technology interventions along with acoustic capacity & capability building. The underwater requires the specialized expertise of acoustics and thus any UDA effort will mandate focused efforts towards acoustic capacity & capability building. The tropical waters of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and beyond, present unique challenges and opportunities and thus the acoustic capacity & capability building in these regions will have to be indigenous. The local site-specific, field experimental UDA, will require customized skills to handle the tropical waters.
